The Nile River is the longest river in the world. It is over 4000 miles long and it is shaped like a lotus flower. Because of this, the lotus flower is often seen in Egyptian art. The Nile is surrounded by natural barriers on all side. To the north: the Mediterranean Sea. To the east: Desert, Red Sea. To the south: Mountains and to the west: Desert.
The Nile provided many gifts for the people who were living next to it. They used it for transportation and food. They made papyrus (paper) from the reeds that grew along the bank. The fertile soil surrounding it was great for farming. The Nile river provided the Egyptians a luxury no other ancient civilization had!

The annual cycle of the Nile River:
June
The snow on the mountain begins to melt and the water flows down into the mountains lakes and rivers.
July
The floodwaters begin to reach Lower Egypt.
September
Although the Nile is still shallow, it widens and the villagers living near it are surrounded by water, like the islands in the Nile
October
The flooding ends and the Nile shrinks, leaving behind rich fertile soil that is good for farming.
November or December
The floodwaters recede, leaving the soil fertilized and ready for crops.
March and April
The crops are ready for harvest,
May
The nile river shrinks to a small stream and the valley turns brown.
June
The cycle begins again.......
